Black Sheep Mattress Company is an exciting local business, specializing in building and selling handcrafted, luxury mattresses from all-natural materials. We emphasize sustainability and transparency, while focusing on creating meaningful, long lasting relationships with our customers. We not only do our very best in building mattresses of the highest quality, but we’re also looking to build a reputation of excellence, in such a way that considers all of our stakeholders as well as the natural environment.
We are looking for a skilled mattress craftsman who can serve as an integral part of the manufacturing process.
The Position:
Full-time (up to 40 hours per week) permanent employment
Co-pay medical/dental benefits are provided
Wage: $24-26/hour
Location: 601 Manitou Road SE, Calgary, Alberta
Job Description:
Product Construction:
Almost all Black Sheep products are made-to-order. Making our products in house specific to our customers' needs using natural materials is what sets us apart from other options on the market.
- Use computer and basic production spreadsheets
- Construct, assemble, and customize mattresses, bases, headboards, and other products according to specific customer preferences and BSM specifications and standards
- Operate various tools and small machinery safely and efficiently to ensure precise craftsmanship
- Finalize production cards for each order
- Participate in the development of new products
- Inspect finished products to ensure every item meets BSM standards of excellence. An eye for detail is very important!
Deliveries & Adjustments:
Black Sheep often delivers our own mattresses to customers in Calgary, as well as performing service calls.
- Deliver mattresses to customers in Calgary and surrounding areas with one other team member.
- Rebuild mattresses at customer homes, as part of our “adjustment policy”
Inventory, Materials Procurement, Shipping In & out:
Ensuring we have proper amounts of materials to build our products is an important part of our production process. Bringing in our materials will require the ability to use computers and communication with our suppliers by both phone and email. Another part of the position is shipping out customer orders in a timely manner.
- Inventory control and ordering. Monitor levels of material inventories and anticipate production volumes to assist in ordering additional inventory as needed.
- Communicate with suppliers to order materials.
- Organize shipping of materials from suppliers to our location.
- Pick and pack customer orders for shipment or delivery.
- Package mattresses and mattress bases for shipping.
Other Tasks:
- Basic cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
- Disposal of garbage and recycling.
- Daily cleaning to maintain a clear workspace

Skill Requirements & Qualifications:
- Previous experience in craftsmanship, mattress construction, sewing on industrial sewing machines, supervising a production team
- Measuring and cutting fabrics
- Good English speaking, reading, and writing skills
- Previous experience in a manufacturing working environment, or in the furniture or upholstery business is preferred
- Sewing skills is an asset
- Proficiency with gmail, google sheets & docs, Slack preferred
- Openness to learn new programs
