A Thank You to Calgary

April marked fifteen years since we opened Black Sheep Mattress!

We remember it being around year four or five, meeting a business owner who'd had his business for fifteen years, and thinking "wow, that's a looong time." Now here we are.

The Friends Who Started Around When We Did

A few years in, we started making friends who had small businesses. We'd meet sometimes for breakfast, catch up at an event, or be part of a group trying to run businesses the right way.

Some of those businesses are still going strong. Others closed after a few years, and some sold and started new ventures.

We think about those conversations sometimes, and honestly, some are still happening with the same people. The shared understanding that nobody really knows what they're doing at first. That you need passion, sure, but also timing, adaptability, and certainly some luck.

We're grateful to everyone we've met along the way, and look forward to those we have yet to meet.

What We've Learned

Quality compounds. Watching customers return after ten years with mattresses still in great shape, or sending their friends because their sleep improved, that builds something price competition never could.

Small is actually good. For years we thought we needed to grow bigger to matter. But some customers specifically choose us because we're small. They can talk to the person who built their mattress. They can see where it's made. That's not a limitation, it's the whole point.

Community is real. "Shop local" can sound like marketing talk, but after fifteen years, we've seen how interconnected Calgary's small businesses actually are. When we do well, it ripples through others. When they succeed, it comes back to us.

Customers save us in ways we don't always see. There were moments along the way, more than a few, when things felt precarious. But every time, we did what we could, customers showed up, we got to work, and the sun came out again.

The People Who Make This Work

Our team has been incredible. Liza's been with us for ten years, managing everything with a level of care that makes it all possible. Joe, Juan, Sarah, and everyone else who's been part of this, sometimes we think luck might just be having great people around you.

Without them, none of this happens.

What Hasn't Changed

We still build every mattress by hand. Still use natural materials; Talalay latex, wool, cotton. Still value durability over disposability. Still care more about getting you the right mattress than just making a sale.

Still right here in Calgary. (Although we did flirt with Toronto for a bit 😄)

What Calgary Customers Have Given Us

During economic downturns, you kept supporting local businesses when cheaper options existed.

Through a pandemic, you adapted with us, scheduled showroom visits, phone consultations, creative solutions.

In everyday moments, you chose to drive to our showroom instead of clicking "buy now" online. You asked thoughtful questions. You cared about where your money goes.

You didn't have to do any of that. But you did.

That's why we're here fifteen years later.

You gave us the opportunity to do work we're proud of. To employ people who care about their craft. To build something meaningful in our community.

Every small business exists because customers choose to support it. Thank you.

What's Next

More of what's working: quality mattresses that last, supporting our team, showing up for Calgary, and learning from what you tell us you need.

Fifteen years taught us that sustainable businesses aren't built on dramatic pivots. They're built on showing up consistently, doing good work, and honouring relationships.

That's easier and harder than it sounds. But we can't imagine it any other way.
