Our Good Night's Sleep Campaign: Better Rest for Calgarians

At Black Sheep Mattress, we believe that everyone deserves better rest. 🖤

After months of thoughtful planning, our Good Night’s Sleep Campaign came to life in October. Earlier this fall, we sat down with our production team to develop a plan to utilize some of our leftover mattress materials. We left that meeting feeling inspired to create new pillows out of our extra supplies, with the intention of donating them to those in need. In an effort to make a lasting, positive impact within our city, we packed our vans full of pillows just before Thanksgiving and delivered them to four non-profit organizations across Calgary. Families who are supported by the Children’s Cottage Society, Discovery House, Inn From the Cold, and Trellis Society are receiving fresh, Black Sheep pillows so they can rest easy this season.

As one of our core values, sustainability is at the heart of what we do. We always say, “think globally, act locally” and so every mattress and sleep accessory that is crafted in our workshop is created with the planet in mind. For years, we have recycled retired mattresses and boxsprings through our partner, Re-Matt Inc. Through our Good Night’s Sleep Campaign, we’ve found another meaningful way to honour our commitment to sustainability - by recycling our scrap mattress-building materials into high-quality, natural pillows that promote better sleep and health. Take a moment to learn more about each organization below.

Children's Cottage Society

Since 1986, the Children's Cottage Society has been giving children a secure, nurturing place to land while families cope with challenges. More recently, the non-profit opened their new Child & Family Centre in Montgomery, which is home to a 20-bed crisis nursery, a family resource network hub, their parenting skills development classes, and much more. This is an incredible spot for Calgary families to find refuge during difficult circumstances.

Discovery House

Discovery House is a safe place to call home for families that are fleeing domestic violence. Back in the day, Calgary had an emergency shelter by the late 1970s, but there was nowhere women and children could go after a maximum three-week stay. Currently, their shelter offers 19 individual and furnished apartments with 24-hour security, laundry, and other essential spaces. Beyond the main house, this amazing non-profit runs a Community Housing Program, which allows for families to find safe, stable, long-term housing in the city.

Inn From the Cold

Creating Hope. Achieving Stability. Two priorities for Inn From the Cold. Through their emergency shelter, 24/7 support, and hands-on programming, this Calgary-based organization is helping locals overcome the obstacles that can lead to a cycle of homelessness. The shelter takes a trauma-informed and housing-first approach, serving Calgarians from all walks of life.

Trellis Society

Trellis is passionate about creating a community where everyone can flourish. The society formed in 2020 when the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary merged with the Aspen Family & Community Network Society. Together, the two had a vision for a larger organization with more substantive programs and services, aimed at supporting families. Since then, Trellis has been making bounds in how it serves the Calgary community with educational programs, settlement services, housing support, foster care, and various Indigenous initiatives.

We're happy to say that so far, we have proudly donated 100 pillows to local Calgary charities, and we hope to continue this work into the future. We feel grateful to be a part of such a vibrant, caring community!
