Textiles in Motion: Calgary Artist Natalie Gerber

Intention, craftsmanship, and the art of slow creation are at the heart of our process—values that also define artist Natalie Gerber’s approach to textile design, making her work a natural complement to our philosophy. Earlier this year, our Toronto showroom became home to her latest textile installation, "DO: Making as an Act of Endurance," a piece that explores the boundaries of craft and materiality as part of DesignTO.

About the Artist

Natalie's artistic journey began in Durban, South Africa, where she studied Fashion Design at The Natal Technikon. After immigrating to Canada, she further honed her skills at the Alberta University of the Arts, earning a BFA in Fibre/Textiles with Distinction. Her pursuit of excellence led her to the London College of Fashion, where she obtained a postgraduate certificate in Creative Pattern Cutting for the Fashion Industry. This diverse educational background has profoundly influenced her approach to textile design, blending meticulous technique with creative exploration.

The Essence of Handcrafted Textiles

In her Calgary-based studio at cSPACE Marda Loop, Natalie focuses on boutique, small-scale production of hand-printed textiles. Her work is characterized by clean lines, thoughtful patterns, and a harmonious balance of color and form. Drawing inspiration from her South African heritage, she begins with detailed sketches and line drawings, which evolve into intricate patterns applied to cloth through silkscreen printing. This process reflects a deep respect for materiality and a commitment to sustainable, conscious creation.

Natalie's philosophy centres sustainability and craftsmanship. Her emphasis on environmental responsibility and community initiatives in support of sustainable futures to create art and textile products that prioritize both quality and ecological mindfulness. By incorporating natural fibres and traditional techniques, Natalie contributes to a broader dialogue about conscious making and material awareness.

An Exploration of Textile Tradition and Process

Natalie Gerber's dedication to the art of handcrafted textiles serves as an inspiration and a testament to the enduring value of intentional, sustainable creation. Her work not only enhances our physical spaces but also enriches our understanding of the profound connection between maker, material, and the art of slow living.

Her most recent installation, BECOMING runs from April 4-12 at Calgary’s AUArts IKG Gallery. This research and creation project explores the complexity of the embodied feminine experience as it is expressed through the hands of the maker. Natalie leads viewers through an exploration of the field of textiles, expanding into a post-disciplinary practice including book arts, and ceramics, in which it becomes clear that subjectivity, perception and performitivity are not binary experiences; they echo each other.

“Living in the roundness of life, to be; and within a cycle of transformation, being; makers become part of the becoming. Through this research and creation process I have come to find strength in the unknowing and a sense of resolve. To learn and unlearn yourself is humbling, and contingent on your measure of vulnerability. I have paused, to rest in the work. Unfinished.

Be.

Being.

Becoming”

Natalie’s work serves as a profound reminder that true artistry exists in the details, in the interplay between form and function, patience and spontaneity, tradition and innovation. Hosting her installation at Black Sheep Mattress was not only a privilege but a continuation of our own commitment to craftsmanship and material integrity.

For those who experienced her work in our Toronto showroom, we hope it offered a deeper appreciation for the intentionality behind handmade design, whether in textiles or in the pursuit of better sleep.
