The Environmental Challenge of Mattress Disposal

Mattresses, by their very nature, are large, bulky, and difficult to dispose of responsibly. Every year, Canadians discard around six million mattresses, most of which end up in landfills where they take decades to decompose and occupy a significant amount of space. This not only contributes to the growing waste problem but also impacts the environment through harmful disposal practices, such as incineration, which can release toxic emissions.

The good news? A typical mattress contains up to 95% recyclable material. With the right recycling process, much of this waste can be diverted from landfills and turned into new, useful products.

Our Solution: Working with Local Heroes

To tackle this issue, we’ve partnered with Re-Matt, a local Calgary business and Alberta’s first mattress recycling company. When you purchase a Black Sheep Mattress, we’ll take your old mattress and box spring and deliver them to Re-Matt, where they’ll be broken down into raw materials like steel, wood, foam, and cotton. These materials are then repurposed to create items such as moving blankets, firewood bundles, and quilt batting, giving your old mattress a second chance at life.

In 2021 alone, we recycled over 170 mattresses and box springs. That might seem small compared to the millions discarded nationwide, but to put it in perspective—that's taller than the Eiffel Tower! Every mattress we recycle helps reduce the environmental footprint and contributes to a more sustainable future.
