People choose to sleep on natural mattresses for two main reasons:

1) to avoid the chemicals and synthetic materials found in conventional mattresses, and;
2) for the health, safety and comfort features of natural materials.

Most conventional mattresses are made with synthetic fills, fabrics and foams, and chemical additives, some with known health risks, and others that simply have not been researched or tested thoroughly. For details on the health risks of these materials, read our blog post

The good news is that, beyond the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly what you’re sleeping on, a mattress made with all-natural materials can provide unsurpassed comfort, support and safety. Natural materials are more breathable and sleep cooler than synthetics. Read our blog post for more details on the benefits of natural materials.

All of our mattresses contain wool, whether in the casing or the mattress itself, which is naturally fire resistant. Wool performs exceptionally in all categories of non-flammability - it doesn’t ignite or flame easily, is self-extinguishing, and does not melt, stick, or release highly toxic fumes while burning the way synthetic materials do.

When it comes to mattress-making, we truly are the “black sheep” of the industry, defying convention at every turn. All of our mattresses are made with the best natural, non-toxic materials available, and are custom-built to meet each customer’s unique sleeping needs.

As a small, local company, we are able to provide exceptional care and customer service every step of the way - and we think our reviews on Google, HomeStars and Facebook speak for themselves!

Choosing a Mattress or Foundation

Our Choosing a Mattress Guide provides information on all of our mattresses, with steps for choosing and customizing your dream bed.

Excellent question! And one we get all the time. Choosing the right foundation is very important and depends on what you're looking for with regards to height, and which foundation will work with your frame (if you want to keep it).

Our Choosing a Foundation Guide provides lots of information on this topic.

If you're looking for additional customization beyond what we already offer online, just call, email, or visit us in the shop and we'll see what we can do. For example, we can make our Oxford mattresses extra soft or firm, and can also accommodate custom heights and dimensions with certain models.

About Our Masks

Whichever you prefer! Both styles have the same materials and function, they just have different looks. Our customers with glasses prefer the contoured style as it is better for preventing fogging of lenses.

The pleated style is one-size-fits-all, so we recommend it for any adult. For the contoured masks, we recommend medium for women and large for men.

The kids' small is best for ages 5-7, and the kids' large is best for ages 8-12.

All styles and sizes have elastic ear straps that can be adjusted for a more accurate fit.

No, our design does not include a pocket. We are using a double-lined, tightly-woven fabric, so adding a filter to these layers would prevent proper air flow.

Untie knots before washing. We prefer to handwash but you can also machine wash on a delicate cycle. You can tumble dry on low, but this may result in wrinkling and the need to iron. To avoid wrinkling, smooth out mask with hands and hang to dry. Do not iron the ear straps or they will melt!

You should receive your email order confirmation within a few hours of purchasing, and your mask pickup information within 2-3 days.

If you don't see either of these, please first check your spam folder or junk filter. If you still don't have them, please contact us at hello@blacksheepmattress.com or 403-455-8491.

Yes, we now offer free contactless local pickup. If you're in the Calgary area, select Pickup at checkout. You will receive an email once your order is ready with pickup instructions.

You may cancel your mask order for a full refund before it gets shipped or picked up. Please email us as soon as possible to cancel, and allow us 2-3 business days to process your refund.

Due to the nature of the product, we cannot accept returns or exchanges once the order has been shipped or picked up.

Orders & Shipping

In response to quickly changing circumstances with COVID-19, we are providing all major updates here on an ongoing basis. We have also provided more detailed updates to our Shipping, Returns & Orders policies here.

Production times vary by product and are listed on each product page.

For mattresses in Calgary, you will be contacted when your order is ready to schedule a pick-up or delivery date at your convenience.
Please allow 2 weeks for shipping transit time outside of Calgary.

Please contact us if you have any concerns about the timing of your order.

In a rush? We typically keep a stock of some of our smaller and most common items such as kids' mattresses, crib mattresses, pillows, sheets and protectors, and may be able to arrange a quicker turnaround time for certain orders, upon request.

We provide free shipping on orders over $350 within Canada.*
For orders under $350, shipping rates are calculated at checkout.

Free local pickup is also available for Calgary residents.

*A shipping surcharge may apply in the case of remote or rural locations. If you live outside a major city, please contact us for a shipping quote beforehand.

We are pleased to offer free in-home delivery for mattresses and bases in Calgary. For all other locations and smaller products, free delivery will be curbside.

If you wish to arrange (paid) in-home delivery service for locations outside of Calgary, please contact us and we will do our best to arrange this.

In Calgary, we can also take your old unwanted mattress or boxspring to be recycled, at no extra charge. We can recycle additional pieces for a fee. Just let us know when you place your order if you plan to use this service.

A shipping surcharge may apply in the case of rural/remote locations. Please contact us for a shipping quote prior to placing an order.

For some rural/remote locations, the delivery company will ship only to the nearest depot. The customer will be notified when the mattress arrives at the depot, and is responsible for picking it up there within 24 hours (to avoid holding fees).

We are currently unable to ship our mattresses internationally.

Should you find that your mattress is too soft or firm, we are happy to adjust it for you, free of charge, within 90 days of your delivery date. This only applies to the Oxford and Devon models - the Suffolk model is non-adjustable.

We recommend sleeping on your mattress for 2-3 weeks before scheduling your free adjustment, as it can take some time to get accustomed to a new bed, particularly if you've been sleeping on the same older mattress for years.

To arrange your free adjustment in Calgary, simply contact us. We typically will come to your house at a scheduled time to do the adjustment on-site.

We provide a free 90 day adjustment for Oxford (latex) mattresses only, outside of Calgary. In this case, customers are responsible for the cost of shipping (basically shipping one layer of latex each way), which we'll help you set up.

Unfortunately we cannot adjust spring-based mattresses (the Devon) from a distance due to expense and the likelihood of the product becoming damaged in transit.

We recommend sleeping on your mattress for 2-3 weeks before scheduling your adjustment, as it can take some time to get accustomed to a new bed, particularly if you've been sleeping on the same older mattress for years.

Because our products are custom-made to order, we unfortunately cannot do returns or exchanges.

If you need to cancel your order, please contact us within 24 hours.

We guarantee a 10 year warranty for all of our mattresses and bases.

Please note: customers outside of Calgary will be responsible for any shipping or transportation costs associated with warranty issues.

When we deliver your new mattress (in the Calgary area), we can take your old mattress and boxspring to be recycled at no extra charge. We can recycle additional pieces for a fee. Just let us know when you place your order if you plan to use this service.

Gift Cards

Yes, we have gift cards available in $50, $100, $200, $500 and $1000 denominations. You can purchase in-store or online.

Gift cards can be purchased here or in store. The gift card will be emailed to you, with a code that can be redeemed online at checkout, or in the store on any product.

Product Care

Our preference is a surface that is flat, sturdy, and breathable.

We do not recommend reusing an exisitng box spring or using curved/bowed slats with our mattresses.

The right base or frame improves mattress longevity and comfort, by allowing for better breathability (flow of air and moisture) as well as proper support and stability.

Visit our Choosing a Foundation page for more information.
